In order to introduce our institute, may I give you a short review of the ships-doctor-work of this Center?
First of all I introduce myself. My name is Dr. Imre Melles. I am the medical-director of the Center for fifteen years. I have two-year practice at sea embarking on board of Hungarian seagoing ships.

During my two -years practice on board I have learnt the specific characteristics of the occupation and work at sea, and since then I continuously develop my ships-doctor knowledge, just a study of a hotel-ship is in process.

Returning back to the Medical Center's work, I have to call your attention that the Aviation, Shipping, and Maritime Medical Center is the only Center in Hungary, which has legal authorization from Administration to perform the medical fitness examinations of Seafarers and to issue the certificates. The following legislation refers to our authorization:

1. Joint Decree number 14/2002.(II.28.) KöVim-EüM, of the Ministers for Transport and Water Management, and the Health Affairs, on 'The procedure of health conditions and issuance of medical licenses for special service of civil aviation'.

2. Joint Decree number 21/2002.(XI.8.) GKM-ESZCSM, of the Ministers for Economy and Transport, and Health, Social, and Family Affairs, on 'The Procedure of certification and conditions of medical fitness of Seafarers, and Inland Shipping.'

3. Decree of the Cabinet number 237/2002.(XI.8.) Kormányrendelet, on 'Tasks and competences of the authorities for shipping.'

Our Medical Center is working within the framework of the National Institute of Occupational Health, its headquarter is a fifteen minutes distance by foot from here. To complete our medical examination we are making use of the X-ray and Laboratory exams of the nearby Merényi Gusztáv hospital, and we are on-line connection with them, so requiring and receiving of reports are computerized.
The Medical Center performs fitness examinations of average 2300 aviators, and 700 Seafarers yearly, the statistics of Seafarers' examinations can be seen here.
The handling and storing of documentation are performed parallel both on computer and in written reports, and as you can control it, the medical records are available returning for years on both ways.
The process of the examination is going on as follows:
The patients have to call our mobil number +36-30-246-7646 or phone-number +36-1-280-6809, and they have to registrate themselves. The examinations begin at 07.00 morning. After the personal identification the patients fill out prepared questionnaires, of course, we are helping them to answer.
This will be followed by the full and complete internal, surgical, laryngological, and ophthalmologic examinations, furthermore we hand over the transfer orders to the X-ray and laboratory examinations. Between 09.00 and 11.00 o’clock clinical specialists are also available for the more detailed specific examinations, if necessary.
